Seven and a half kilometres of wall
The ramparts of Taroudant are among the best kept in Morocco. Here's how to see them.

Taroudant was briefly the Saadian capital in the sixteenth century, and the walls it built then still circle the whole town: about seven and a half kilometres of ochre rammed earth, crenellated along the top and broken by great gates.
By calèche
The classic way round is by horse-drawn calèche, starting near Bab el Kasbah. It takes about an hour. Go an hour before sunset, when the walls go from ochre to deep orange.

On foot or by bicycle
The road outside the walls is flat and lined with olive trees. We have two bicycles at reception, and a map with the five main gates marked.
The gates
Bab el Kasbah is the grandest. Bab Targhount leads out towards the tanneries. Each gate has its own small square, café and rhythm through the day.
