The souk before the crowds

Taroudant's two souks are calm, honest and unhurried. Go early, and go with Malika.

Taroudant has two main souks: the Arab souk, with its spices, leather and Berber silver, and the Berber market, where the farmers of the valley sell what they grew. Neither feels like a show for visitors.

What to look for

Silver jewellery from the Anti-Atlas, argan oil from the cooperatives, saffron (check it's from Taliouine), dried roses and good leather babouches.

Shopping with Malika

Twice a week Malika shops for the kitchen, and guests can come along. It's the best way to learn what a fair price is, and the stallholders will show you things they wouldn't show a stranger.
